Are your kiddos whining that there’s nothing to do for summer yet? Mine are! I think they started saying they were bored after about 5 minutes into our summer vacation LOL!
If that’s you, make sure to check out my whole series on summer boredom busters to help give you some ideas. Lakeshore Learning also has a whole section of free craft ideas for kids on their website too!
I love doing family game time when there’s inclement weather, or if it’s just way too hot outside to head out. Of course we love the old classics like Sorry, Monopoly, Life, Chess, and Scrabble. And recently I found this fun game from Lakeshore Learning that they really enjoyed playing.
It’s called “Allowance” and players earn or spend money as they travel around the board. It’s a fun and relatively fast paced game. It’s also great money counting practice as well.
I have a 20% off coupon just for you all too! (Good through 8/31/15 only)
Yipee!!

The game is really easy to play with fairly simple rules, so it’s not too complicated. It also helps with working with decimals, and critical thinking as well since players can decide what to spend their money on, or if they want to save it and earn more as they go.
The game board is nice and colorful and the money is a great hands-on experience as well. I would have liked to see some little bins for the money or something since the coins kind of spill onto the game board, but it wasn’t a huge deal. you could easily use a small Tupperware container or something to keep the coin contained.
My older kids loved this game, and I’ve seen them pull it out more than once in the afternoons when it’s too hot to go out and do anything.
And since it’s so insanely hot here, I wanted to share one of my kids favorite outdoor activities with you. We made these a few years back and they’re super easy and affordable. An most of all fun! It’s called the Sponge Splasher activity for kids. It’s a great way to beat the summer heat, as well as get outside and get some fresh air too!
And after you’re done tossing the sponges at each other, you can use them to make sponge art!
Wow, look at how little Strawberry Shortcake was! This was back in 2012 so she was only 9. Man time flies, she’s about 1” shorter than I am now and can fit in my shoes. Sigh…
Here is one of our finished pieces:
I have a special 20% off coupon for my readers, so make sure to take advantage of that too!

We have this game at home and love it. The best part about it is that the game is realistic. I love Monopoly as much as the next person, but with a child who has learning challenges, it’s hard to explain money and properties….and large sums of cash.
My 6 year old son requested this gift for Christmas and it was a hit! It is still played often and it’s awesome how he helps his 4 year old sister when they play all by themselves. We love playing it as a family too!
Also, the link for the 20% off coupon for Lakeshore Learning doesn’t turn up as a coupon. 🙁 It only takes you to Lakeshore Learning’s website. I was really looking forward to coupon with my children’s birthday coming up.
Hi Gissel,
You might want to check it again. I just clicked it and it comes up with a coupon for me.
I’m having the same issue. When I click on the link it just takes me to the main page with no coupon.
Hi Regina,
I’m not sure, the link is working for me here is the direct link: http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/general_content/store_locations/coupons/staticCoupon9830_083115.jsp
We recently bought this game and we love it! It is really helping my 6 year old calculate money and have fun.
The link in the post, nor the one in the comments, shows me anything about the 20% off coupon. The both only take me to the main Lakeshore Learning site.
Bummer, since this game looks fun and I would like to grab it.
I’m having the same issue. Neither way of obtaining the coupon seems to work. Would love to purchase the game though!
Nevermind! I just saw this post was from 2015… that might be the issue! 😉
Sorry Marcia, this post was from 2015 so the coupon is no longer available 🙂
