Good morning everyone! Since weโve completed my K4 Kindergarten program last year. However since the Teeny Tot isnโt old enough for first grade yet, I decided to do the ABeka K5 reading program with her this year for review, and to enhance her reading. Here are the products that I use, and what I think is necessary out of all of their options for kindergarten.
I did want to mention that Iโve had these products since Strawberry Shortcake was in kindergarten. ABeka has since upgraded some of their items, and so they might look a bit different now. Just wanted to give you a heads up!
Click the play button below, or click here to see my ABeka K5 Reading Review video:
Here is a list of products that I recommend getting if you plan to use the K5 reading program.
- 198021 Homeschool K5 Phonics, Reading, Writing and Numbers Curriculum
- 99201 Letters and Sounds K5
- 101109 Basic Phonics Readers
- 182389 Basic Phonics Flashcards
- 102083 One-vowel word cards
- 102784 Two-vowel word cards (New option you might like to add)
- 167177 Letter Picture Flashcards
- I donโt think they sell the Basic Phonics Charts anymore, unless itโs the Phonics Charts and Games possibly.
I hope you enjoyed that video, and check back soon for my next curriculum video review!
Sorry everyone. Video should be available now.
I have the same teacher manual, readers, and flash cards that are shown in your video. I noticed that you are using a newer student book. Since Abeka has revised their K5 materials, I was wondering if the newer student book is compatible with the older teacher’s book, readers, and other materials.
I’m using Abeka for my daughter. I love this reading program! ๐ I made my own blend practice cards, one-vowel/two-vowel word cards, and the clue word cards. They are very easy to make. I found the basic phonics charts and basic phonics flashcards really helpful. They are used from K-2, as you said, and at the very beginning of the third grade for review.
I love your curriculum video reviews! I can’t wait for the next one!
Hello, is this the only thing you use for the school year? Or do you also do numbers, and writing and other things? Thank you!
Hi Paris,
No, we use many different things, you can see everything she’s doing this year here:

I really like A Beka Book materials as well. I am curious as to why so many type “Abeka” instead of “A Beka.”
Suzanne,
ABeka is just a quick way to refer to the company. The full name is A Beka Book ๐
Is the older teacher manual compatible with the newer student books?
Hi Kristen, I’m not sure, you’d have to ask ABeka, but from the looks of the newer workbooks I would say probably not. Best to email them and ask for sure though!
Hi Erica! Thanks so much for this review! It was very helpful. Our Abeka rep said the Basic Phonics charts are sold in the first grade category and the number is 95354. Hopefully this is helpful! Have a great day!
Erica,
I am really curious on your thoughts of All about reading level 1 versus Abeka? I will be starting homeschooling with my kindergartner next fall and am currently investigating different curriculum choices.
Thanks
Hi Erica,
I didn’t do Abeka for K. We are finishing up 100 Easy Lessons and phonics workbooks. I want to do Abeka 1st dvd program next year. Since you are familiar with Abeka Reading, do you think she will be ok to go into first grade?
Thanks!
Hey- Quick question— I see you have an older lesson plan book with the newer workbooks… I just accidentally bought the older lesson plan book on ebay thinking it was current (new to Abeka materials)… Will it still work with the new books?
I’m sorry, I’ve gotten rid of all of my Kindergarten materials ๐ I definitely suggest checking out the version when ordering used curriculum to make sure you’re getting the current versions ๐
