Hi everyone! I’m all about the giving spirit right now, and so I have another giveaway for you this week! I’ve had a lot of questions on our photography curriculum that we’ve started this year with my 6th grader, and so I’m going to do a review and giveaway of it for you today!
The Photo Finch was created by a good friend of mine, Ernie Treu, a fellow homeschooler, and an amazing photographer! And not only is she a photographer, but she has created two different and awesome homeschool curriculum! (You can read more about Ernie in her bio here.)
Both curriculum are geared towards Junior High and High School students, but my 6th grader is going through it and she’s doing great! The lessons are easy to understand, and each lesson has accompanying assignments for your student to complete.
As they progress through the lessons they’ll be creating a photography portfolio of their work!
Composition & Photojournalism ($79 Download, $84 CD)
This course is divided into two sections – Rules of Composition, which refers to arranging the visual elements in your image to draw the viewer’s eye, and Photojournalism – using images to tell a story.
This course DOES NOT require the student to have any specific kind of camera. They can do this course with a dslr, point & shoot, even a phone camera, whatever they have available. Here’s how the course is set up: There are 16 photography lessons, teaching students how to create visual interest as well as capture the story in their pictures. Each lesson is followed by one or more shooting assignments (30 in all), designed to help your child take the information they read and put it into practice through hands on learning.

Shooting in Manual ($79 Download, $84 CD)
This group of lessons and assignments is designed to give your child an understanding of how their camera works, the knowledge of how to use it to it’s full capabilities, and the confidence to create images that reflect them as an artist!
This course DOES require the use of a camera that can shoot in manual mode, either digital or film. Here’s how the course is set up: There are eleven lessons, covering a range of topics from camera equipment and settings (ISO, Aperture, & Shutter Speed), to lighting and basic editing. Each lesson is followed by one or more shooting assignments (30 in all), designed to help your child take the information they read and put it into practice through hands on learning.

What do we think?
So far I really like this curriculum. The lessons are easy to follow, and the assignments are fun! Right now we’re only doing it once per week, but I have to say that is probably one of Strawberry Shortcakes favorite days. She loves taking pictures, and this curriculum is really helping her to create beautiful shots. We’ve started with the Composition & Photojournalism class because I thought it would be a bit easier for her to follow since she’s on the young side for this curriculum recommended age.
Here are some of the items from her portfolio so far…
I’ve known Ernie for years, she’s done our family photos, and is the one who shot the pictures for our blog header too! She took great care in creating this curriculum, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has a student who is interested in photography. It’s a great way for them to get into the art!
Now for the best part…the giveaway!

My oldest has been asking me about photography recently. This is perfect!
We would LOVE to win either course!!!!
Shooting in Manual sounds like a great course for my daughter (and me). Thank you for the opportunity.
This course looks fantastic and just what I needed for my ten year old. He has been asking for photography lessons. I took photography in university but needed help with knowing how to teach it back to a young person!
I would love to win Shooting in Manual.
My kiddos would love this! They got new cameras last year for Christmas, and this would be a great gift for this year!
What a fantastic giveaway! I’d love to win Shooting in Manual. It would be a great reference for my kids!
We’d love to try to Composition and PhotoJournalism. Wow, seems like a great study!
