Students will also cut out the letters and spell the word correctly to complete their sentence, great for fine-motor skills and spelling practice! Next they will write the word to complete the sentence.

  1. Hello Erica,
I just wanted to say thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you for all your hard work and for sharing all your creations. I am a grandmother who recently began home schooling my 7 year old granddaughter. Public school was leaving her behind and she was literally a nervous wreck. She began stuttering so badly that she could hardly get out a single word. We had planned to wait until the next school year but decided we didn’t want to put her through any more misery. So last February we began our home school classes. Since we began she has excelled. I have used so many of your creations and ideas for our home school. You are very talented and I believe God has sent you on a mission of helping people like me and my granddaughter. I had an extra bedroom and I set that up as a classroom. This is just a beginning for us and I know we have a lot to learn but I believe we are starting out on the right foot. Thank you again for being our inspiration. Polly Gulley (grandma) and Emma (granddaughter).

  2. Thank you for your website! My son attends public school. I have been doing some research to help my struggling 1st grader keep up. I appreciate your free printable worksheets, it means so much! I noticed today how ‘available’ worksheets are but all cost money that I don’t have. I can’t wait to explore your website for more information that can help me-help my son. Thank you!

  3. I happened across your website during my search for help via Internet this evening. I happen to believe that everything happens for a reason. I pray that you can help or guide me in the right direction.

My son Carson is a 9-year-old third grader. He is in special education for reading at school, beginning this year (which I had to ademently push for). I was advised today that he is reading at kindergarten level. His teacher suggested that I go back to kindergarten level reading exercises at home, not using third grade material. No problem, but where do I start???? I need a ‘lesson plan’ or something! Please offer suggestions: lesson type, length of lesson, etc)

    1. Talk to a Kindergarten teacher in your child’s school, ask for resources, tips. His current teacher should help him, too, and suggest/provide you with materials that can help your child.

On your own, search online for materials for kindergartners, for beginning readers. Start with preprimer sight words. Teach 4 new words in one week. Post these everywhere your child can see it at home, probably his bedroom and kitchen. Have him write them down, trace them, give him a sandbox and have him form the word there. Search for the black and white caterpillar somewhere here online. Celebrate his success by making him add to his caterpillar and let it grow by adding new ones. Black and white so he can color each sight word, using light colors or making him shade lightly so words stand out. Post his sight word caterpillars in his bedroom or playroom and have him read them several times a day.

Read about common core standards and check online what is expected of Kindergartners. Go to curriculum corner web site so you can see a more friendly version of the goals other wise known as the I CAN goals. You will see all the objectives from K to 12 and it wil help you see what is expected of your child in order for him to approximate the performance of his grade-level peers.

Expose him to educational online websites. Have him play at Starfall starting from letters. Teach him beginning sounds using pictures and word cards.

Ask for help. Always. It won’t hurt. Just help you.
