I know with school nearing a close for many of you, you’re wondering what you’re going to do so your kiddos don’t forget all those precious tidbits you so carefully lodged in their brains over the course of the year. While I don’t plan anything super hard core for summer (we all need a break, me included!) I do keep the kids reading over the summer, mostly fun books. They get to pick what they want to read and as long as it’s appropriate for them, that’s fine.
Just to keep all of the other subjects fresh in their minds, we also do some activities out of the Carson Dellosa Summer Bridge activity books! They’re literally ZERO planning on my part, and great for keeping kids skills fresh over the summer.
Keeping up with your students reading, math, and other basic skills over the long summer break is important. I’m not sure if this happens to your kids, but it seems like a few weeks after school is out my kids seem to forget everything they’ve learned the previous year.
Depending on the day, I usually have the kids are do 1 lesson per day out of their workbook. I don’t usually force the issue too much, there tends to be a time each day where they start getting bored, and the Summer Bridge activities are the perfect solution! The great thing about them, is that they’re colorful and fun, so it’s not hard to get them to do a page or two.
Just to make it a little more fun, we use our Educational Insights Smens pens to make it a little bit more fun. They LOVE IT!
And I kid you not, one of them said “Wow, this is so much more fun than regular school!” and the other came up later in the day and actually asked me if she could do some school in her new workbook! Are you serious? YEAH!

We are signed up for the summer reading program at our library and plan to continue our weekly trips to the library over the summer for interesting books. We are also doing a workbook page or two each day & taking what I envision as an unschooling approach and learning through daily life and fun outings. So far so good. It’s really bothering my daughter though that I won’t let her begin her new books! We already have them, but I’m using the summer to take a break, plan next year, pray for guidance, and regroup! 🙂 I would love to win a summer activity pack!! 🙂
These look awesome!
We started homeschooling my son this year and though we are going to school year round we scale down for a few months in the summer. My daughter and Son both love the Bridges books. They are quick and fun. This summer we are reading some fun books, science Friday’s continuing our state books and art both historical art and practical fun art. Thank you for sharing your idea’s and family. Jen Sherpa
At our house, these would most likely be used as Winter/Spring bridge activities. My husband and I are both in the choir, which gets really busy for Christmas and Easter. I’m the VBS Director at our church, which does VBS during Spring Break. So summer is actually our least busy time of year. We’re actually getting more school done now, but come Thanksgiving-ish, we get really busy and school gets a little lax. These books would be useful for those busy times when we want to make sure she’s still learning, but don’t necessarily have the time to get in a full day of schoolwork. Our school year tends to go from post-Easter to Thanksgiving. New Years to a little before Easter/VBS (whichever comes first that year).
I would love this for my little man to work on over the summer!! We homeschool year round and take breaks here and there as needed, but I also like to include some fun and different ‘light’ stuff over the summer too, these would be perfect!
