I recently had the opportunity to review Beautiful Girlhood by Karen Andreola along with the Companion Guide by Shelly Noonan and Kimberly Zach.
Beautiful Girlhood is a Mother/Daughter Bible study that talks about the transition from childhood to womanhood. The book addresses these sensitive issues in a very tasteful and natural way. It deals with topics including character traits such as: obedience, moral virtues, modesty, ambition, purpose, and truthfulness. It also covers things like the importance of prayer, repentance, and trusting in our Lord, and Savior, Jesus Christ. I really love how they stress that a girl is able to turn to God through the secret power of prayer when she is seeking strength and courage to do what is right.
Some topics may not be quite relevant for younger girls, and towards the end of the book they do have a chapter on “Boy Friends” which we are not quite ready for yet, but again, it is tastefully written.
While it was originally written in the early 1900’s, the topics are still relevant today. It is recommended for girls ages 10-15, and we started it with our almost 9 year old. Though there’s nothing in it that I feel uncomfortable presenting to her at that age, I do think she’ll get a little more out of it if we wait a year or so.
The Companion Guide is also a wonderful tool to aid in the Beautiful Girlhood book. It has discussion questions, Bible activities and applications, along with journaling topics and space to journal about what you’ve learned for each chapter. I know this really helped me in knowing what types of questions to cover after each section.
We also received The Three Weavers by Robert and Shelley Noonan. It is an allegory that brings forth principles regarding purity in a gentle and biblical way. At the end of each chapter is a discussion guide along with some answers they can fill in together. This one deals with the topic of purity right off the bat, and so we have not gone through it yet.
That said, I especially liked the fact that it is a Father/Daughter Bible study. I think so often, especially as a homeschool mom, I tend to be the “primary” teacher of our children. I find it refreshing to have something that my husband can go through with my daughter to help increase their bond. As she grows into this thing called “womanhood” I pray that she has a strong enough connection to her Daddy, that they are able to talk about things openly.
If you have older young ladies in your care, you may also be interested in Beyond Beautiful Girlhood plus Companion Guide. It is geared towards girls ages 12-18.

With a house full of boys, I think my daughter would so benefit from this. We have touched on the subjects but I worry about what she might be hearing at school as well. I would love to have these resources.
What a great resource for raising Godly women!
For me, having grown up without the influence of a godly mom I have long since approached mothering my daughter with a mixture of awe and fear. What an incredible responsibility and I so wish I had resources to help us both and make this a beautiful time during which we move closer to God and each other. Thanks for the resources and I hope we win!
