I promised an update on how we like our PowerSpeak Spanish program and a lovely reader reminded me I haven’t done it yet! We’ve been using it for about 5 months now and I have to say we still LOVE it! (Click here to read my initial review)
This program really makes learning a language fun and exciting. As a parent I love the features they have on your dashboard. You can have more than one student (they each login separately) and it has a parent section so you can go in and check progress, grades etc. We definitely plan to continue on to Spanish 2 when we’ve finished with Spanish 1.
The only thing I don’t like is that they don’t have more lessons! Currently they only offer Language Levels 1 & 2 for elementary level students, each level is 6 months to complete, so you could potentially do both in a year. So that means there’ll be a big break, then the next avail. lessons are Levels 1-2 for middle school. I think that might bit of a jump for my 7 year old to move into a middle school program, so I will probably have to look for something in between until she’s a little older. A PowerSpeak rep. said they are working on some in between classes, but they won’t be released for awhile yet. So it’s just something to consider depending on the age of your children.
Other than that, I love the program, my DD loves doing it and the younger ones typically sit and listen while she is doing her lessons because they think its fun. She’s learning well and seems to be remembering the information, so that means we give a big THUMBS UP for PowerSpeak!
If you want more information on the courses they offer click here for a list. (P.S. I’m not being paid to send you their way, I just like their stuff!)
I just wanted to let you know what a blessing your website is. I'm just starting to more "formally" school my 5 year olds. Being adopted from an orphanage at 2 and 3 1/2 they have delays. On top of that they both have cerebral palsy and have huge delays from that. Your programs have allowed me to really dive into teaching letters and still work on their fine motor skills which are their biggest problem. I wasn't sure how to start and your program was just the answer. I can't tell you how thankful I am. You have been a blessing.
We use Power Glide Spanish for Children (Power Speaks workbook & CD Program) and LOVE it!! I found all of the materials for two children on Ebay for $55! This approach works better than the online program for us because it is cheaper and we can work completely at our own pace 🙂 When my son is a bit older and we have found more of a 'rhythm' with our Spanish lessons, I would love to try the online program 🙂
I have just started to look into Spanish for my PreK daughter, who is showing interest in this language. Would this program be too much for a 4 year old?LOVE your blog!!!
Dianna Jo: Yes, I really think they need to be able to read WELL before starting this program. It is all done online and pretty much everything requires them to be able to read in order to play games, do the quizzes, research online, etc. Also, since they only do Spanish 1 & 2 then move up to Middle School, I'd wait until you're children are a bit older to start.Hope that helps 🙂
Hi Erica,
Are you still using Powerspeak? Was wondering what you thought about grading their oral work. My 7th
graders loved it but the oral grading was my sore point as I don’t speak the lingo.
Hi Frankie,
No we aren’t using it right now because we did the elementary levels, then it moved to middle school. I would use it again though. Right now we have Spanish in our co-op so I haven’t needed another program.
