Lessons: In each lesson Jean teaches a new song and any applicable chords and strumming patterns to go along with the song. The first DVD includes a straight strum as well as thumb strum, and two new picking patterns. The DVD comes with a booklet (written in both English and Spanish.) which includes all of the music taught.

One thing my husband and I both agreed on was that the lesson goes VERY fast for a newbie learner. Jean shows the chords and strumming pattern then goes right into playing the song fairly quickly. I think this is a bit fast for a new player, but that’s where the practice sessions come in handy, so don’t skip those!

Practice Sessions: These sessions cover practice techniques that go with each lesson. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THESE. The practice sessions go a bit slower, help you practice the strumming at a slower pace, and include help with finding the pitch when singing which I thought was nice.

The video is excellent quality, and provides lots of close-ups of her hands when you need to see either the chord or strumming hand.

One thing we thought could be added would be strumming with a pick. Jean doesn’t cover how to hold/strum using a pick on Volume 1, she does everything strumming with her fingers. This was particularly frustrating for my husband who wanted to use a pick.

Jean seems very relaxed and easy going which I think helps aid in the process and I’d love to try her Children’s series!

I think my favorite part is that Jean encourages you to pray for help from God while learning guitar. I have to add that while I was learning to play guitar, I prayed constantly for God to give me the coordination and motivation to stick with it. My main goal in learning guitar, was to be able to lead our family in worship time at home. I truly believe that He answered this prayer and allowed my skills to increase at a pace far faster than I had imagined!

  1. I have to tell you, I was watching the video clip with my 2 year old son (who LOVES music!) When it was over he told me "more!" and did the sign language for it! too sweet. I will have to look into these. I play piano some and have been wanting to learn to play guitar for worship purposes. (A guitar is much easier to tote around than a keyboard!) I love that this teaching video is Christian based and she teaches you worship songs as you go along.
