Happy Thursday friends! It’s time for block #7 in my Sew With Me Sew-a-long! Join me as I teach you how to make some of the most fun and classic quilt blocks!
Throughout this series, I hope to teach you some new skills, tips, and tricks, and at the end of the series, we will have a fun selection of blocks to sew together into a sampler quilt!
Block #7 is a super fun quilt block and there are so many ways to make it unique. This classic and vintage block is called the Sister’s Choice Quilt block.
Traditionally, this block was made using just two contrasting fabrics. You can get a totally different look depending on your fabric placement. You can accent the star with a bold color combined with a light-colored background. Or you can reverse it, and use a light color for the star and a dark fabric for the background. As you can see it really changes the look of the block!
Personally, I think this block is well suited to scrappy designs as well. So, today I will be blending a mix of different fabrics from my stash. In today’s lesson we will learn how to sew half-square triangles 8 at one time, and a quick and easy method for piecing this block together.

I love love love your videos!! You have given me many hours of enjoyment watching your videos. I am. Currently working on your Dresden block pouch and just stumbled on your 2021 Sew With Me series. However I am confused. I thought you were going to do 12 blocks, one per month but I am only seeing 7 blocks. Am I missing something? I want to do this with my sister but don’t want to end up with seven blocks and not know how to finish putting them together and not have the other five. Can you please advise?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello! I just finished the Sister’s Choice block and it came out an even 12 x 12, instead of 12 1/2 x 12 1/2…
Has there been any updates to the cutting instructions?
Hi Janet, the block measurements are correct. Make sure you are using an accurate scant 1/4″ seam when sewing and that should help.
