My 2nd grader came to me today and said that she wanted to study plants and she needed a Nature Walk grid. She had a bucket in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other. Now, I definitely didn’t plan this, but hey, who am I to tell a kid they can’t go learn right? So…I gave her the paper, and let her have at it.

She came in, carefully washed her rocks. Then proceeded to observe each object closely, drew a picture of it, wrote the name, and then taped a specimen on her sheet.

Here are some of her finds: rocks, leaves, tall grasses. We reviews the parts of a plant: Stem, leaves, veins, roots. I don’t know about you, but it always amazes me when they tell you something that makes you realize they were ACTUALLY listening that day you were trying to teach them the anatomy of a plant! LOL!

And here was her final product:

It later dawned on me that this was our first experience in “Un-schooling”. Cool.

  2. We are not unschooling homeschoolers, but I have found more of our days leading that way. I may have to rethink some of the structure in our homeschool because when creativity and curiosity strike, you have to go w/it even if it isn’t scheduled at 10:37am. That is great that she is showing a desire to investigate and learn something on her own.
