Hi everyone! I wanted to take some time this year to re-post some of our Expedition Earth World Geography lessons since we havenβt done it for a couple years and I have a bunch of new readers!
So for the next few months, or however long it takes, Iβm going to be doing a Geography Thursday post on all of the countries we studied using Expedition Earth!
For all of my new readers, I hope you enjoy this series!
Today weβre starting off with our introduction to Geography lesson and we made a paper Macheβ globe.
Just to keep it real, this craft was VERY MESSY!
I highly recommend doing this outside if you can!
Notice how we did it insideβ¦
Stop and say a little pray for me that weβll make it through this years arts and crafts without me losing my mind or my composure.
Okay, moving onβ¦
Supplies:
-
Balloon
-
Newspaper strips
-
Elmerβs glue (I used about 2 bottles!)
-
Mixing bowl for glue mixture
-
Paint
-
Sharpie
Directions:
STEP 1: Mix 2 parts glue to 1 part water and stir well. Dip paper strips into water squeezing off extra glue with fingers. Next lay wet paper strip onto balloon until it is fully covered.
STEP 2: Hang balloon overnight to dry, leave some paper towel underneath to catch drips of glue.
STEP 3: After globe is dry, draw continents on with a sharpie.
STEP 4: Using tempura or acrylic paints paint in the land and oceans of your globe.
STEP 5: Hang globe again and dry over night. After paint is dry, label continents and oceans with a sharpie.
STEP 6: Enjoy! Display in your classroom, use to review continents and oceans through the year!

Discussed Matthew 28:18-20 βAll authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
We always start each day with the Pledge of Allegiance and thank God for our country.
We learned about maps and globes using the book βMe on the Mapβ by Joan Sweeney.
We learned the names of the countries and oceans and played the Geography Hopscotch Game from Spell Out Loud:

I just had to chuckle because the pots in the background make it look like your globe as Mickey ears. :~D
We LOVED Expedition Earth! I’ll be pulling it out for the third year this year. Each year we use different parts of the program and focus on a different part of the world. Really worthwhile addition to any HS curriculum.
This is perfect timing. I purchased Expedition Earth to use this year when it was on sale a while ago.
oooo! We just moved into a new home (new state even!). A paper mache globe is a great idea for our new homeschool room!
We started this curriculum this past week and made the salt dough map of the world because my six year old hates paper mache AND I didn’t really want to make the entire project for him. The map came out super cute and our extended family was really impressed with it. I can tell my boys are going to love the Geography parts of our day already. We played with that hopskotch game too and my son knew all the continents after just one day! I was really pleased. We venture into China in the morning. I’m so excited about extending our studies into our dinners. We’re going to make Kung Pao Chicken, Shrimp Wontons, and Beef Broccoli this week. What do you do with all these amazing large projects your children create? I’ve realized that a giant salt dough map, the Great Wall of China, homemade paper, and so on through the year are going to overtake my home! We’ve never done so many large scale crafts before and while I think they’re really cool and am sure my boys will love them I’m not sure we’ll have room for all this stuff.
We also did the salt dough map, I must admit I think I had more fun than the kids. We only did the oceans and we are going to add the continents as we study the.
Last year I took pictures of everything we did and made a yearbook at the end so I didn’t have to feel bad about throwing the projects away.
I love your globe! This past year we did your “Road Trip USA” and my kids and I loved it! Just a thought about paper mache…. I used a flour and water mixture and it wasn’t so sticky…. but left our volcano nice and smooth. Just a thought π Can’t wait to do Expidition EArth! π
I really love your globe! I’ll make it with my childs!
Thanks π
I am planning to order this for my kids in a week or so, so I love seeing your posts on how you’re using it. I am pretty new to your site..as well as the homeschool world π
Just a suggestion…Id LOVE to see you come out with a Road Trip Canada! We’re in east coast Canada and there’s very minimal curriculum available about our history or geography π
