Hi everyone! As most of you know we are trying out a new English/Grammar curriculum this year and I’ve had several requests to do a review of that for you. We’ve been using Fix It! Grammar now for about 6 weeks and so far I really like it. I also have a giveaway for you so make sure to read all the way to the end!

We are starting with the Fix It! Grammar Level 1 book, The Nose Tree with my 5th, 7th, and 8th graders this year. Now I do want to say that this level is a little too easy for them right now, but I’ve looked ahead and it does pick up in difficulty as the year progresses. But the main reason I wanted to start off with the first book is because it’s a new curriculum for us. I did look at other levels and some of the terms used were not familiar to me, and so I just thought it would be more effective to start fresh with level 1. That way we can learn how it works as well as any new terms etc. And let’s face it, when it comes to things like English everyone can use more review right!

The Teacher’s Manual is currently only available as a hardcopy. However when you purchase the student materials it also comes with a PDF download which you can use to print extra copies for additional students if you don’t want to purchase extra student copies for multiple kiddos.
What I like about Fix It! Grammar:
- It takes less time, about 15 minutes per day.
- It includes vocabulary.
- I like that we’re learning to edit a continuing story line.
- Story is interesting and kids are excited to see what happens next.
- It correlates well with the IEW Writing program.
- Helps reinforce proper paragraph formation, writing structure, etc.
- Teacher’s manual is easy to read and concepts are clear and concise.
- Love the extra teacher notes, so far any questions the kids have asked have been listed in the teacher notes which is great!
- Like the easy reference flash-cards.
- Cost is great!
What I don’t like about Fix It! Grammar:
So far there isn’t anything I don’t like about it, but I’ll do a future review once we’ve had a better chance to use the program.

I’d like to know if you’re still using it and if you:
1. find it to be a complete grammar curriculum?
2. do a vocab curriculum along with it, or just the work given in the pages of Fix it!
Yes, we are still using it. We are currently doing the vocab listed in Fix It! We aren’t supplementing with any other vocab. At first it seemed kind of easy because it was only a word a day. But we review them frequently and now that we are further in the book they have a ton of words to go through.
Now that you’re probable close to the end of the year what are your final thoughts on Fix it Grammar? I’m looking at using it next year.
We really enjoyed it and plan to use it again next year.

We would like to hear how “Fix It! Grammar” has been over the last year? Is it easy to teach? What about teaching them all the rules? Does the teacher guide tell your all about the rules in order to teach it?
We LOVE it, super easy to teach and my kids love it! The rules are all in their student workbooks and it was fairly easy to get going. The TM tells you everything they should be doing as well, so it’s super easy for me to teach and grade. We’ll be using it again for sure!
I just purchased Fix It and plan to use it for my 11 yr and 13 yr old. I am so excited to give it a try! You say that you use IEW Writing with it. I remember looking at IEW Writing quite a few yrs ago with my older kids but it really overwhelmed me. I feel like Fix It explains it all really well. At least that’s what it seems and doesn’t take too much time. Is IEW Writing similar or is it overwhelming, and something that you do have to get used to. Thanks for your thorough review.

Would you say that purchasing the teacher’s manual is a must? I know that some homeschool programs are totally useable with just the student book as long as you are not brand new to teaching. What are your thoughts on this? Also, would you consider skipping the first book for a high 6th grade writer? I am reading from a number of people that it is not super challenging. Thanks so much for the great info!
I like having the TM for this just because it makes grading easier, and I think I would miss some things without it!
Do you do daily lessons of both Fix-It-Gtammar and the IEW writing curriculum? Or do you alternate days?
Hi, yes we do them daily. Fix It! Grammar is set up for 4x per week, then we do writing as well. I usually do a video lesson on Mondays then they have the rest of the week to do the assignment. But the writing is really flexible and you can kind of set it up however fits your schedule best. it also depends on if you’re doing a themed based unit vs one of their Structure and Style units.
How do you get access to the video lessons? Another friend mentioned the video lessons but I couldn’t find info about it on the website. Thanks!
Hi Erica, thanks for your great curriculum reviews. Would you recommend starting this curriculum in 4th grade, and would supplement it with any other language curriculum, or is ir enough by itself. Thanks.
Hi, IEW recommends starting in 3rd grade, but 4th is also fine, and really you can start it whenever you want. I do suggest doing their book 1 to start even if it’s a bit too easy, it does have a lot of basic instruction that they repeat in the following levels.
