Hi everyone! I can’t hardly believe it, but apparently 2013 is just about gone!
I don’t know how it’s already November.
I feel like this year just flew right by without me noticing.
Apparently I was busy homeschooling or something?
Anyhoo…on to the point of my post today.
I thought it would be fun to share a Christmas Around the World Unit Study with everyone.
This unit is part of my Expedition Earth World Geography, but can also work as a stand-a-lone holiday unit study as well.
What is it?
Christmas Around the World is a unit study designed to introduce students to how different cultures across the world celebrate the Christmas holiday! Since it’s nice and simple, you can easily insert this unit wherever Christmas falls within your school year. It covers 9 different countries across the globe and includes fun hands-on activities, recipes, and cultural traditions!
Since the activities are mostly hands on crafts and recipes it’s great for all ages!
What countries are we studying you ask?
- Japan
- China
- Russia
- Great Britain
- France
- Italy
- Germany
- Spain
- Mexico
What’s included?
This mini-unit study includes some fun facts for each of the above countries and their customs regarding Christmas celebrations. Included are some fun hands on recipes and activities to help make the study memorable!
It also includes a set of Christmas flag ornaments representing 31 countries that are included in my Expedition Earth curriculum so you can create your own international Christmas tree!

Erica,

Thank you so much for sharing this resource. I am wanting to do something special during the month of December and this will fit in perfectly! This looks amazing and I know my kiddos will love it. God bless.
Thank you! I had plans of doing this and your units are always so well put together. Thank you again!
Thanks so much for sharing this. Look forward to starting this next month 🙂 .
I know you said it covers 9 countries, how many weeks would it take to complete? Thanks! I am new to homeschooling this year with a 10yr old son, 8 yr old son, and almost 5 yr old daughter. We started with using sonlight which I love, but I am thinking of using unit studies as a more relaxed and needed break from the very scheduled layout with sunlight on occasion. Thanks!
Hi Mary Beth,
Really you can do it as quickly or slowly as you want. There is just a small excerpt regarding how that country celebrates the holiday. Then a couple crafts or recipes for each one. You could do it in 9 days if you wanted :o)
Thank you for sharing this Erica! I’m part of a facebook group and lots of us are going to be using this unit study next month! Thanks again!
Malissa
I’m in a group doing this next month and several shared this study. Any particular book you recommend?
Hi Lori,
You don’t need any books to go with it, all of the information is included. But if you’re just looking for an Advent/Christmas type book we like Bartholomew’s Passage, Tabitha’s Travels, and Jotham’s Journey. WE also like The ADVENTure of Christmas by Lisa Whelchel for lots of fun Advent ideas :o)
I hope that helps, please email me if you have any other questions!
Thanks so much! We’re focusing on geography and cultures this year, and want to learn how Christmas is celebrated around the world. This is perfect! The ornaments for an “international tree” are brilliant. We also bought a book called (what else?), “Christmas Around the World” by Mary Lankford, for those who are looking for an idea.
Thank you!
