So to see what my 2nd grader will be doing this year watch our 2016-2017 2nd Grade Homeschool Curriculum video here!

2nd Grade Curriculum:

Options: We participate in a once a week options program through our local school district. They offer a variety of classes that help supplement our homeschooling. It also provides the kids with a fun day where they get to see their friends and participate in a classroom environment. Here is a list of her classes this year:

  • PE
  • Language Arts – We of course do this at home as well, but I’m finding that it’s a nice supplement to what we’re doing.
  • Science – they get to do fun things like experiments, dissection, electronics, and more.
  • Spanish
  • Music – Choir and basic instruments.

And that’s it for our 2nd grade curriculum line up this year! I’ll try to do a mid-year update to let you all know how it’s going. We’re trying some new curriculum this year, so that’s always exciting!

  1. Hi Erica!
I am looking into Abeka for my 2nd grader for next school year. I am curious, do you purchase the teacher kit, as well? I am curious if I can just “wing it” without purchasing all the extra.

  2. Just wondering…So do you prefer Spelling You See over All About Spelling? And if Spelling You See is teacher directed, does it get to be a little much with several children in it? With AAS being teacher led think I would depend on the older children to be able to do their spelling on their own for the most part. I don’t usually purchase spelling curriculum, but looking into it for this next year.

    1. Hi Kristi,
You can do it with your elementary students! I just save it for 4th grade because we are required to do a state study in 4th grade so it just fits with our state requirements better 🙂

  3. Hi Erica, I’m considering homeschooling our two daughters next school year. I am half way through your book so I can gain a sense of what to expect and how to get started. Thank you for putting the book together, btw! I’m a little overwhelmed with curriculum choices. I am leaning more towards Abeka but its so expensive! Do you also buy the parenting materials that go with the student kit? My girls will be in 2nd and 5th grade next year and it being our first year, I want to make sure I have everything we need but I’m just not sure about any of it right now. I’ve researched our state requirements (AL) and they seem very lax for church cover school homeschooling so I think whatever I go with will be accepted. When I skimmed over options on the Abeka website I started getting nervous about their accredited option versus independent study and whether or not I should go through with homeschooling all together! Are there some states that don’t accept independent study homeschooling curriculums all together? Sorry I’m asking so many questions. My husband works in a corporate position so we move about every 2 years which is one of the reasons I want to homeschool.

    1. Hi, I don’t use all of Abeka, just the phonics/language/reading for this grade, so I purchase the TM for the phonics/language, i think it comes as one thing anyway. You might see if you can get it used on eBay, my BUY/SELL/Trade on my community (link above) or elsewhere online. There are usually a lot of Abeka resources you can find used 🙂

    2. Yes, I usually get the TM for the language/phonics lessons and science. You can purchase them individually and often you can get them used as well, just make sure it’s a current version that will match the workbooks. As far as I know all states accept homeschooling at this time, but their regulations can vary. I would check out http://www.hslda.org to see what’s applicable for your current state. If you move regularly it may change as you go.
