Happy Thursday friends! Today is so exciting because I am launching my 2021 Sew With Me Sew-a-long! Join me as I teach you how to make some of the most fun and classic quilt blocks!
Throughout this series, I hope to teach you some new skills, tips, and tricks, and at the end of the series, we will have a fun selection of blocks to sew together into a sampler quilt!
We will be starting off with a super easy quilt block, the Sawtooth Star block. This is a fun and classic quilt block that has had many different names throughout the years. It was originally called the Sawtooth Star block back in 1884 when it was published in the Farm & Fireside magazine. Since then it has also been referred to as the Variable Star, North Star, and Evening Star.
Regardless of what it is called, this classic quilt block is so much fun to make! And today I will be showing you a new technique called the “four at a time” flying geese technique. Of course, you can make the star points in a variety of ways, but the four-at-a-time method will make this block so easy!

Hello 👋
I’m a crafter (and homeschool mom!), but new to quilting and wanted to try your quilt along. I don’t have the kind of fabric stash more experienced quilters probably have. Can you advise how much background color fabric I should get? And also would a charm pack or jelly roll be ok to use for the print fabrics? Or do you suggest getting fat quarters or yardage so the squares can start bigger? I really want to do this but am feeling a little lost on what size/how much fabric to buy. I want to make the 12 inch squares. Thanks for your help!
Hi Susan,
So the blocks are all a big scrappy and different. I don’t have final fabric measurements yet, but I’ll see if I can get that figured out and announce it in the next video. For the most part a FQ per block should be enough for most of the blocks backgrounds. The charm pack and jelly roll may work on some, but no, they won’t work for all because of the different blocks we are making and how we are constructing them. So I would suggest FQs over smaller precuts. That way you know you’ll have enough especially if you mess up cutting.
Hi Erica,
Thanks for your help! I will get a few FQs and start with that for easier construction 🙂 I appreciate the guidance!
Hi Susan, if you have an Instagram account, follow #getyourquiltywishesgranted7 let quilter’s know you are new to quilting and in need of fabric scraps so that you can follow Erica’s quilt-a-long. You be surprised at the number of quilters that can help you out! #quiltyfriendsarethebest 😍 hope to see your quilty requests on IG.
I have tried several times to download the PDF for the saw tooth blk. And nothing dwnlds. I watched your video on the making and subscribed to your u tube channel ???
Hi, try RIGHT clicking the download link and then select ‘save file as’ and see if that works better 🙂 It may also be downloading automatically to your downloads folder, so you can search your computer for 2021SewWithMe_Block1.pdf and see if it hasn’t already downloaded.
Hi Ericka,
Thank you for creating this mystery BOM for us! I am very excited to see what blocks you share each month 🙂 Your tutorial videos are great and I enjoy seeing what quilts you have showing in the background.
Kind regards,
Judy
I’m two blocks behind, but I’m still enjoying this so much. <3
Well, I have finally finished block #1 and it took a couple of tries to get the tooth blocks to come out to 6 1/2 x 3 1/2. I’m new to sewing these kinds of blocks but I wanted to try it. It’s a little stressful but I want to see if I can make myself a quilt when I get this done. Lol. I’m glad you have this on YouTube I do a lot of stopping and backing. Thanks Erica for sharing all of your crafting knowledge with us.
So glad you are enjoying the videos! 🙂
Hi Erica
I have just come across your come sew with me videos on utube and you were making number 11.
Can you please tell me how often you post these blocks making videos to Utube.
thanks
Meg
Hi Erica,
I love your tutorials! I’m trying to find a specific fabric you used in this block. It’s the background fabric with the pinkish lettering. Do you know who the designer is? Thanks!
It is an older Lori Holt print 🙂
