Hi everyone, today I’m sharing our 8th Grade Homeschool Curriculum choices with you. We’re a few weeks into the year and so far we’re happy with all of our picks!
Watch our 2019-2020 8th Grade Homeschool Curriculum video here:
Here are links to the curriculum we are using this year:
- Bible: Word of Life Challenger Quiet Time for Teens
- English/Grammar: IEW Fix It Grammar Chanticleer Book 5
- History: The Story of the World – Early Modern Times Vol. 3
- Literature: COAH 8th Grade Literature List (I have about 5-6 books planned for her this year)
- Math: Math U See Algebra 1
- Science/Health: Abeka Science 8
- Writing: Institute for Excellence in Writing Theme Based Writing Unit
- Optional Art: Atelier Art Level 8 (We’ll be doing art at options, but this is a great program if you’re looking for one!)
Options: We participate in a once a week options program through our local school district. They offer a variety of classes that help supplement our homeschooling. It also provides the kids with a fun day where they get to see their friends and participate in a classroom environment. Here is a list of my 8th grader’s classes this year:
- Creative Writing
- Spanish 1
- Language Arts
- Painting
- Theater
And that’s it for our 8th grade curriculum line up this year! I’ll try to do a mid-year update to let you all know how it’s going. We’re trying some new curriculum this year, so that’s always exciting!

Hi Erica! Thank you for your 8th grade curriculum and Fix it! Grammar review. I know you started with the first volume (the Nose Tree) for your three older children. How did that work out? I want to start my will-be 6th and 8th graders on Fix it! but am not sure where it is best to start.
Hi, if you’ve used IEW products before you can probably start on a higher level. We just started at Book 1 because it was new for us. It is definitely a little too easy for an 8th grader and maybe your 6th grader, but you can always have them do more than one sentence per day and just go through the level a bit faster if that works better.
Thanks so much for the advice!
Do you have a 5th grade reading list, like you have for 7th and 8th grade?
Yes, I have one for each grade level here: https://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/help-by-grade-level
Hi, my 6th grader recently switched to Saxon math (we mostly used Math Lessons for a Living Education in the past), but I’m wondering if Math U See would be a better fit for her. I noticed you’ve moved away from MUS in your curriculum this year, just curious if you still like and recommend it. How did your children do switching from MUS to Shorman Math for high school? If we end up with Saxon (or Dive or Shorman) in high school I’m thinking we should try to make Saxon work for middle school. BUT I really think my daughter needs and would benefit from the kinesthetic teaching of MUS. I would love to have any advice you can offer! Thank you!
Hi,
We just moved from MUS this year because my older kids are doing online math for high school and MUS wasn’t working as well for my 6th grader, but I do love it. My older kids did fine moving into Shormann Math and it is a bit more rigorous but they prefer the daily video lessons so it’s going well for them. If you are doing okay with Saxon I would stick with that. But if she needs more hands-on help then MUS is a great way to go.
